TOWING BIKES TO AVERT TRAFFIC CONGESTION

The Roads & Transport Authority (RTA) has launched rapid deployment bikes for towing faulty vehicles or vehicles involved in minor traffic accidents off the road to ease traffic jams.

Such bikes are the first of their kind to be used in the Middle East and the UAE has become the fourth country worldwide that uses these vehicles as a means of rapid deployment to recover faulty vehicles, maintain traffic flow and ease traffic congestions.
Studies conducted by the RTA reveal that emergencies and traffic accidents are among the key factors of road jams and account for 16% of the traffic congestion.

This ignited the idea of introducing Honda Goldwing Bikes; each capable of towing a 2.5 ton vehicle at a speed of 30 kph. It could be smoothly driven and maneuvered between vehicles on congested roads; thanks to its miniature size (width is 95cm only).

The rapid deployment bikes, which are electronically linked to the traffic systems of the RTA, will tow away the vehicles which suddenly breakdown on the roads and dispose them within minutes to avert any traffic bottlenecks or jams. The service will be operational between 6 am and 9 pm; which is the period that witnesses the peak of traffic jams. In the first stage of the experiment four bikes will be deployed to cover key spots in the city of Dubai, in which breakdowns or accidents cause serious traffic jams, namely Sheikh Zayed Rd, Al Shindagha Tunnel, Al Maktoum Bridge and Al Garhoud Bridge.
